  • Jay Valanju

    Chief Executive Officer

    Mr. Valanju brings 13 years of entrepreneurial experience in financial services, social media, and telecommunications. Prior to founding BuzzBanking, he was a Partner at Steinwasser, Inc., a technology and business consulting firm with offices in Texas and Germany. There he specialized in business consulting in financial services, healthcare technology and energy. Mr. Valanju was a founder of Fusion Mobile, a wireless Mobile Virtual Network Operator with operations in regional retailers with operations in over a dozen states.

    Prior to Fusion, Mr. Valanju was Director of Business Development at Pluck Corporation, a social media company which was later purchased by Demand Media. At Pluck, he managed programs with eBay and traditional printed media properties. He was also a co-founder of FundsXpress where he worked on business strategy and technology. FundsXpress is an Internet banking and financial services company serving financial institutions nationwide. FundsXpress was acquired by First Data Corporation.

    Mr. Valanju is a business and technology strategy advisor to the Managing Editor of the PetroChem Wire, the leading Ethylene daily industry newsletter and index for NYMEX/CME Group contracts. He was also a business advisor to EosHealth, a company bringing next generation disease management and healthcare programs to patients worldwide via social media. Mr. Valanju has served as a scientist conducting astrological research for a research group at UC Berkeley. He has a B.A. in Physics from The University of California at Berkeley and holds an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin where he focused on Entrepreneurship and Technology Commercialization.

  • Daniel Kim

    Chief Technology Officer

    Daniel Kim has 17 years of experience in technology and comes from a background in data mining, machine learning, user interfaces and creating unique user experiences. He was a founding Partner in Steinwasser, Inc., a technology and business consulting firm with offices in Texas and Germany. There he specialized in evaluating technology investments and provided guidance on mobile technology, social media integration and architecture. He has been involved as CTO for several technology startups and has also founded MindQuilt Inc, an enterprise knowledge management platform. He was also a co-founder of FundsXpress where he worked on the first user interface for internet banking, graphics design and database technology. FundsXpress is an Internet banking and financial services company serving millions of customers at financial institutions nationwide. FundsXpress was acquired by First Data Corporation.

    Mr. Kim lived in Germany as head of Concepts and Prototypes for the world’s largest telecommunications company, Vodafone Global, and has recently moved to Austin to provide technology leadership to the Company.

  • John Burns

    Chief Vision Officer

    John Burns’ professional background includes 30 years of executive management experience in finance and technology. He has extensive experience in managing corporate activities for both public and private companies, from startup to acquisition. Mr. Burns, Mr. Valanju and Mr. Mansour founded BuzzBanking, Inc. in August of 2009 to pursue a new concept to create reward and loyalty products for financial institutions and merchants that take advantage of the new ‘terms of engagement’ – Social Media.

    John Burns was founder, Chairman, & CEO of FundsXpress, a leading Internet Banking company providing services nationwide to over 1,000 financial institutions and millions of end users. At FundsXpress, he raised over $80 million in equity capital and was endorsed by numerous banking associations. In 2000, Mr. Burns and FundsXpress received the coveted 5-Star Award from the Independent Bankers Association of Texas for being the year’s top banking services provider. FundsXpress was acquired in 2007 by First Data Corporation.

    In 2003, Mr. Burns founded MoneyVue Financial, creator of Reward Checking. In 2005, MoneyVue was acquired by BancVue Ltd., a Texas-based banking services firm. Mr. Burns served on its board of directors until July 2010. BancVue provides deposit products and web services to more than 1,500 banks and credit unions across the U.S. Also in 2003, Mr. Burns was founder of SkyVue USA, a provider of enterprise class wireless broadband networks and services to banks and credit unions. Mr. Burns led the sale of SkyVue to ERF Wireless, a publicly traded firm, and served as CEO of the Enterprise Networks subsidiary and on the parent’s Board of Directors until March 2008.

    In 1976, Mr. Burns founded and was President of Balcones Computer Corporation, Inc. and later Mesa Systems, Inc. Balcones designed computers, software, firmware and other advanced technology products for the State of Texas, DEC, Xerox Corporation, Dell Computer, Microsoft (MS-DOS OEM implementations for most major PC manufacturers in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s) and Ford Motor Company. While at Balcones Mr. Burns personally designed and developed the Boss Financial Accounting System, which was one of the first microcomputer-based real-time accounting systems. Prior to Balcones, Mr. Burns was President of Growth Corporation, developer of Greystone Center, a $5 million office and retail real estate development on Mopac Freeway in Northwest Austin, Texas

    Mr. Burns is a past President of the Advisory Board of Directors of the Science Academy of Austin at LBJ High School where, in 1998, he was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year by the Austin Independent School District for the nationally acclaimed Austin Adopt-A-School program. Mr. Burns holds a BBA in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin where he attended on a football scholarship.

  • David Fruhling

    Chief Operating Officer

    Mr. Fruhling bring over 20 years entrepreneurial experience in strategy, operations, marketing and finance, with experience starting, financing, growing and running companies. Mr. Fruhling also has advised many companies on strategy, capital formation, operations, partnership and intellectual property strategies.

    Most recently, Mr. Fruhling was a partner, senior lead consultant and investment banker with GrowThink, the nation’s leading investment banking and advisory firm for emerging tech companies. There he led consulting and investment banking engagements with companies in enterprise software, on-line & social media, health information technology and medical devices.

    Mr. Fruhling brings a Venture Capital perspective as well, having worked at Murphree Venture Partners (MVP) while earning an MBA at the University of Texas at Austin and then joining the firm full-time after graduation. He then spun out with a Murphree Ventures partner, and with funding lead by MVP, co-founded Advent Networks, a telecommunications equipment company. He helped raise over $27M through 3 rounds of financing serving as CFO and then as Chief Operating Officer building and leading the team that delivered the first 40mb/s data system for the cable infrastructure.

    Mr. Fruhling has personally raised venture financing over multiple deals in areas of telecommunications equipment, enterprise software, distributed computing software and industrial technologies. At these companies, he has held roles of CEO, COO, CFO and VP Sales and Marketing. He also has a background in technology commercialization having successfully licensed an internet security technology from CU Boulder to Secure64.

    Mr. Fruhling started his career at Intel in operational, manufacturing and corporate finance and was selected by Intel to lead financial planning for the startup and launch of the Intel/Siemens joint venture, BiiN that resulted in funding of over $200M. After BiiN, Mr. Fruhling returned to Intel where he led Intel's Corporate Capital Budgeting group, working with Andy Grove, Gordon Moore and Craig Barrett.

    Mr. Fruhling has served on several advisory boards, including the Entrepreneurship Steering Committee for the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Business and several high tech firms. He was also a Fellow and Faculty Member at the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Customer Insight (CCI). Mr. Fruhling holds an M.B.A. in Finance and Technology Entrepreneurship from the University of Texas at Austin and a B.S. in Finance from Brigham Young University.

  • Mike Moehle

    Senior Vice President Sales

    Mr. Mike Moehle is an entrepreneurial executive from the communications industry with diverse management experiences spanning over 26 years. He was founder of four successful telecom companies from 1985 to the 2009. Mr. Moehle is a proven team builder and catalyst, creating new business opportunities, exploring new market niches, establishing strategic business relationships, and overcoming regulatory barriers.

    From 2006 to 2009, Mr. Moehle served as Senior Vice President for ERF Wireless placing private wireless networks in the banking, petroleum and commercial enterprise locations. From 2003 to 2005, Mr. Moehle was Vice President Sales and Marketing and Corporate Development for Corban Communications/Corban Networks (formerly Qwest) where he managed sales and marketing activities for a nationwide wireless communications wholesale carrier. He also oversaw U.S. member acquisition and retention for the digital network and real estate divisions. From 2001 to 2003, Mr. Moehle was Senior Vice President of ViaNet Technologies, Inc., a publicly traded company, where he founded the wholesale telecommunications company that successfully built an IP network through acquisitions. He also developed the service offering of international transport services for Tier-1 and Tier-2 carriers throughout the U.S. and Mexico. At ViaNet, he grew business from the ground floor to $50 million in revenue.

    From 1997 to 2000, Mr. Moehle was President/CEO/Chairman of PrimeTEC International, Inc. where he founded the wholesale telecommunications company, creating three key global offices and two international switching centers for international product distribution. He grew revenues to $100 million in a two-year period. He successfully established subsidiaries in the U.S. and six European countries. From 1987 to 1996, Mr. Moehle was Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing, of Capital Network Systems, Inc., where he co-founded the company specializing in call center services and domestic and international long distance voice services in the U.S. and Mexico. He managed sales and marketing personnel providing call center services to the hospitality industry. Capital Network Systems was also the original provider for long distance calling for Continental Airlines’ frequent flyer program. His strategic accomplishments include managing a workforce of 300 people internally and remotely, and building annual revenues to $45 million in an eight-year period.

    Mr. Moehle has a Master’s in Education from Texas State University and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas.

  • Brian Rainey

    Chief Financial Officer

    Mr. Rainey has a background in accounting and finance, having worked in the Industrials Group at Deutsche Bank in New York and the Venture Capital Services Practice at Deloitte in the Washington DC area.

    At Deutsche Bank, Mr. Rainey focused on serving clients in the Industrial Technology and Global Diversifieds subsectors in a variety of M&A and capital markets situations. His transaction experience includes public and private transactions as well as both domestic and cross-border M&A. At Deloitte, Mr. Rainey focused on venture backed early stage growth companies, providing accounting and audit services ahead of potential public market share offerings, private sales, or further growth capital raises.

    Mr. Rainey received his BBA in Accounting and Finance from James Madison University in Virginia and his MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. He holds a CPA license from the State of Virginia.

  • Eddie Schultz

    Vice President Data Operations

    Mr. Eddie Schultz is a former bank operations officer with more than 20 years of experience in bank operations and data processing including the successful opening of a de-novo bank in 1981.

    From 2007 to 2012, Mr. Schultz was the Manager of Data Acquisitions for BancVue, Ltd. a Texas-based banking services firm. He was responsible for developing the company’s standard data specs for all client financial institutions which covered more than 600 institutions and 50 core banking platforms. In 2012, Mr. Schultz received the company’s Patch Award for outstanding achievement.

    From 1999 to 2007, Mr. Schultz was the Senior Product Engineer for FundsXpress, Inc. an Austin based Internet banking firm. At FundsXpress, Mr. Schultz was responsible for obtaining and validating all data files received from over 600 client financial institutions. Mr. Schultz was recognized with the Chairman’s Circle Award in 2001.

    From 1996 to 1999, Mr. Schultz was Vice-President of MIS and Data Center Manager for Hartland Bank, a $300 million locally owned bank based inAustin, Texas, where he was responsible for administering the bank’s new PC LAN/WAN network and managing the bank’s in-house data processing center for 8 branches. Mr. Schultz implemented in-house check imaging in 1997 and a core banking platform change in 1998. When the bank was sold to a national banking chain in 1999, Mr. Schultz worked with the new institution’s acquisition team on the core platform migration before leaving to join FundsXpress.

    Mr. Schultz has a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Finance from McNeese State University.

  • Jeffrey Citron


    Jeff Citron is the Managing Partner of KEC Holdings and is considered a technological pioneer and industry leader. Throughout his career he has used distributive technologies to transform industries ranging from electronic trading to financial services and telecommunications.

    Jeff began his career on Wall Street as a trader, where he quickly developed the skills required to create one of the first electronic communication networks, The Island ECN. Introduced in 1995, it quickly transformed the financial services industry and was later sold to Instinet Group, now part of NASDAQ.

    At the same time Jeff was creating Island, he was also transforming another industry, financial services. With the creation of Datek Online, Datek brought the power of professional trading tools to the everyday investor. Under his leadership, Datek became the fourth largest online brokerage company in the U.S. and Jeff was named Chairman and CEO. He retired from the company in October 1999 and Datek was later sold to TD Ameritrade.

    After transforming Wall Street, Jeff set his sights on another industry, telecommunications, with the founding of Vonage. Launched in 2001, Vonage pioneered voice communication via high speed Internet and cloud enabled devices. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of the New Jersey-based company. Vonage has some 2.4 million subscribers in the U.S., Canada and United Kingdom. He served as CEO from 2001 to 2006 and has acted as Chief Strategist and interim CEO. In May 2006, Vonage was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

    Along with being a visionary entrepreneur, Jeff is also a passionate philanthropist. In 1999, Jeff and his wife founded the Charles Lafitte Foundation aimed at helping people and others around them lead healthy, satisfying and enriched lives. CLF focuses on four primary causes: children’s advocacy, education, medical research and initiatives, and the arts.

  • Scott O'Hare


    Scott O'Hare recently retired from Dell after 14 years of service. In his most recent role, he served as Vice President and General Manager of Dell’s Software and Peripheral Group, a business unit he grew from $3 billion to $10 billion in annual revenues. Scott held a number of other segment leadership positions within the company, including GM responsibilities for the Small and Medium Business Group, the Preferred Accounts Division, the Higher Education Division and Dell Canada. Scott started at Dell in 1994, as Vice President and Assistant to Michael Dell, where he worked on corporate strategy.

    Prior to Dell, Scott spent seven years as a management consultant and McKinsey and Company and five years as an exploration geophysicist with Chevron.

    Scott earned a master’s of business administration from the Tuck School at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, as well as a bachelor of arts in political science and a master of science in geophysics from Stanford University. He currently serves on the board of trustees of St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, and the MBA advisory board of the Tuck School at Dartmouth.

  • John Pugliese


    John Pugliese is currently President of Motors Management Corp., Inc.  This company provides management oversight and direction to one of the top 100 active dealership groups in the country.

    In addition, since 2010, John has been on the Board of Directors for Team Capital Bank, and most recently was elected Chairman of the Board.

    In 2007, he was head of a quantitative currency advisory boutique, BNY Plus analytics.  This boutique, based in Germany, is a joint venture between BNY and gfta analytics.  He oversaw the day-to-day activities of the venture and had direct responsibility for the overall strategic direction, marketing, and client administration.  In addition, he was charged to oversee The Bank of New York’s interest in BNY ConvergeEx (a recent spin-off of BNY in October 2006).

    John was also Head of Consumer Banking at The Bank of New York, overseeing a retail network that was among the largest on the New York-metropolitan area, with more than 340 branches, representing over 3,000 employees and over $15 billion in deposits.  Through this network, the Bank provided a comprehensive selection of deposit, lending, investment and insurance services to 700,000 households and small businesses, representing over 2 million accounts.  In this role, he managed the successful swap of the retail business to JP Morgan Chase in October 2006, a deal valued at over $3.1 billion.

    Also, in his recent past at the Bank, he established and managed the Bank’s company-wide (22,000 employees) quality assurance initiatives.  In this capacity, he oversaw the design and launch of CLIENTfirst, a company-wide quality assurance program that employed a blend of process enhancement, staff training and development, as well as client and staff assessment.  This approach instilled a client centered corporate culture.

    Since joining the Bank in 1990, Mr. Pugliese held a number of key leadership positions in the areas of product sales, institutional marketing, stock transfer, investment services and consumer banking.  Throughout his roles, he was instrumental in changing the Bank’s business environment in order to compete effectively, grow market share, and increase profitability.

    Mr. Pugliese also held key positions during both Bank of America and JP Morgan’s custody acquisitions, as head of customer retention, and acted as head of synergy for the Pershing transaction.  In that role, he was responsible for generating over $120 million in both revenue and expense synergy for the combined organization.
    John also served as Chairman of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Metropolitan New York, as well as on the Board of Regents for St. Peter’s College.

    Prior to joining the Bank, he was Vice President of IBJ Schroder Bank and Trust Company, responsible for product development for its corporate trust and agency services.

    Mr. Pugliese earned a B.S. degree from St. Peter’s College in Marketing in 1981.  He and his wife live in Morganville, New Jersey, with their two children.

  • Dan Mica


    Daniel A. Mica is a former U.S. congressman and recently retired as president and CEO of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), the leading trade association representing the nation’s 9,000 credit unions and credit union leagues in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

    Mr. Mica assumed his duties at CUNA in July 1996, a time of major internal and external challenge for the association. He restored sound financial management to the association’s business operations, unified credit unions in support of legislation - now law - protecting consumers’ membership rights, significantly strengthened CUNA’s advocacy programs, and gave the association a more visible presence in Washington, D.C. CUNA now regularly appears on Fortune magazine's list of the most influential Washington trade associations. In early 2011, Mr. Mica was named by The Hill newspaper as one of the top association advocates in the nation's capital.

    A five-term member of Congress, Mr. Mica represented his home state of Florida from 1979 to 1989 in the U.S. House of Representatives. During that time he made his mark in public service as a bipartisan consensus-builder. He served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Select Committee on Aging, and Veteran’s Affairs Committee. He also served in the House leadership as deputy whip; and he was a member of the U.S. Secretary of State’s Commission on Terrorism (the “Inman Commission”).

    His accomplishments while in Congress include investigating management corruption at the largest government-funded health maintenance organization (HMO) in the country, authoring anti-terrorism legislation that was enacted into law and reorganizing the federal court system by adding a new court district that helped relieve the system’s backlog of cases.

    While serving in Congress, Mr. Mica was appointed by President Reagan to be congressional representative to the United Nations. In 1991, President Bush appointed him to serve on the Board for International Broadcasting. In 1993, he was appointed by President Clinton to serve as Chairman of the Board of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

    After leaving Capitol Hill, Mr. Mica joined the American Council of Life Insurance in Washington, D.C., as executive vice president overseeing ACLI’s federal affairs division. He was with ACLI, the life insurance industry’s leading trade group, from 1989 to 1996. From 1968 to 1978, he served as chief of staff for Congressman Paul G. Rogers (D-FL).

    Mr. Mica holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Florida Atlantic University. He also holds an honorary law degree from Barry University, Florida.

  • Lloyd DeVaux


    Lloyd DeVaux is Chief Operating Officer of BankAtlantic Bancorp. Mr. DeVaux joined BankAtlantic in June 2001 as Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer and Head of Technology and Operations. He was promoted to Chief Operating Officer of the bank in March 2004 and promoted to Chief Operating Officer of the holding company in February of 2006.

    His responsibilities include strategic planning, de novo expansion, acquisitions and conversions, investor meetings and road shows, talent management, capital and operating budgeting, technology strategy, and management of numerous departments including legal, deposits, loans, call center, Cash Management, ATMs, online banking, project management, and branch support. He is also responsible for the quality of regulatory and internal audit exams and interfacing with the regulators and auditors. He chairs the Technology Steering Committee and New Branch Committee, and is a member of the Investment, ALCO, SOX404, Officer Loans, and the New Products committees. He is also one of four members of the CEO’s Business Planning Committee working in conjunction with the CFO, the Chief Talent Officer, and the CEO.

    Prior to joining BankAtlantic, he was Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer for $35 billion Union Planters Corporation (1995-2001). He managed technology and operations for eight divisions including Information Systems, Deposit Operations, Loan Operations, Branch Operations, Cash Management Operations, non-branch channels (call center, online banking, ATMs), and the project management office. His responsibilities spanned twelve states and six operations centers and included 1,900 employees. He managed the acquisition and conversion of over 50 financial institutions while at Union Planters, growing the company from $5B to over $35B in assets.

    Mr. DeVaux holds an MBA degree in Finance and Marketing from Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College where he finished #1 in his class. He attended the University of Buffalo on a basketball scholarship and graduated with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. He also graduated from Harvard Business School’s Owners/Presidents/Managers (OPM) program in March of 2010, completed the Sustainable Market Leadership course at Harvard Business School, and holds certifications in Commercial and Consumer Lending.

    Currently a Senior Associate at Greycroft Partners, a digital media VC in NYC and LA. Also a cofounder of Venturing Hoyas, an organization focused on promoting entrepreneuriship at Georgetown University. Previously received an MBA at Harvard Business School, focusing on digital media, technology, and investing.

    Helped out Chris Sacca at Lowercase Capital for a year, focusing primarily on seed stage companies and investments in consumer internet and digital media. Prior to HBS, spent time at Cisco in Corporate Development doing M&A, venture investing, and strategy, focused on enterprise software and collaboration. Also spent time focused on ecommerce at DN Capital, a early-stage VC in London. Began career in growth equity investing at Summit Partners in Boston.

  • Jeff "JP" Parkinson


    JP is a member of the Corporate Development team at KEC Holdings. His responsibilities span the entire spectrum of KEC Holdings’ investment activities.

    Prior to KEC, JP was an Associate at Z Capital Partners, a distressed-for-control private equity firm. Prior to Z Capital, he worked on the CDO desk at ABN Amro, where he managed a multi-billion dollar TRS portfolio. JP began his career as an Analyst at Citigroup.

    JP earned a BBA in Finance with distinction from Texas Christian University and an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.
